Breast Implant Safety

When it comes to breast implants, there are a lot of myths about breast implant safety. It's time you had the scientific facts presented to you so that if you are trying to decide if breast implants are for you.

It seems the news has been filled with reports of women suffering from autoimmune disease as a result of breast cancer. There has also been a great deal of coverage relating to breast cancer and an increased risk from implants.

While all this attention in the news is going on, the scientific world is busy conducting more tests and more studies. It's important that you have up to date information to base your decision on, minus the sensationalism that the media brings to the world.

Another recent study by the National Cancer Institute showed that there was no significant increase in the risk of breast cancer. You can visit www.nci.nih.gov/newscenter/siliconefactsheet to see the entire study.

A report released by the National Academy Institute of Medicine issued the following statement: "The NCI researchers found no association between breast implants and the subsequent risk of breast cancer ... Women with breast implants were not at an increased risk for connective tissue disorders when their records were reviewed by two independent rheumatologists who did not know if the women
had an implant or not."

All women, regardless of breast implants or not, are at risk for certain diseases including breast cancer, and that there is no correlation between breast implants and breast cancer.

However, implants can make it more difficult to detect breast cancer on the mammogram, so it's a good idea to have a mammogram before you have your implants. It makes it easier for future comparisons.

Of course, with any surgery, there are some risks, which your plastic surgeon will discuss with you, but as a whole breast implants are safe, just ask millions of women around the world.

Choosing The Right Breast Implant For You

Each of us has a different body shape and that means each of us has our own unique pair of "girls." When Mother Nature hands out breasts, they aren't always what we envisioned, but thanks to science and surgeons we don't have to live with what Mother Nature provided. Now you can choose the right breast implants for you ...

There are different sizes to choose from - but you already know that. Did you know that you can also choose shape and texture? And now you can once again choose between silicone and saline?

There are both round and contoured shapes that you can choose from. The contoured implants are sometimes called teardrop implants. These are thought to be the most natural shaped. They are inserted under the chest muscle, and they have a texture to them which stops the implant from being able to move from its original location.

Round implants are the oldest and most common, and some women still prefer the fullness of this type of implant. Think Pamela Anderson. Round implants are usually placed under the pectoral muscle and because the walls are so thin and there is no texture, they are the most natural to the touch.

You have the choice between silicone or saline implants. Silicone implants are a solid gel and feel very natural to the touch. Saline implants are often housed in a very thin silicone shell.

You and your surgeon will decide what the best type of implant is for you. You likely already have an idea of what size you want the girls to be. You and your surgeon can determine if it's right for you. You and your surgeon will also discuss all of your questions, helping you to have confidence in your surgeon's skills and knowledge.

You are going to look great and feel great with the new "girls."

Don’t forget you also need to choose a qualified surgeon. You’ll find that during your consultation ,many of your questions will be answered. However it is better to have some knowledge and research, so that the questions you ask are relevant and the answers you get you understand.

When you are done you should have a beautiful natural looking set of “girls.”

Saline is by far the most popular type of breast plant currently. There are many reasons:

* Saline implants are preferable if you have more breast tissue.
* Saline is made of a liquid which is salt water so absolutely safe.
* Saline breast implants offer the option of being able to adjust the volume after the procedure using a valve that’s attached to the implant. That means you can change your mind about cup size at a later day.

Let’s have a look at what silicone has to offer:
* With silicone you can choose shape, texture, and thickness.
* Silicone is very natural feeling because of its texture.
* Silicone has far less rippling and wrinkling.

They are preferable for women that have less breast tissue.

If you are considering saline breast implants, you must be at least 18 years of age, but if you are considering silicone breast implants, you must be 22 years of age.

Now that you have the starting facts, you are better prepared to do more research.

A Breast Lift To Perk Up The Girls

Are you feeling a little saggy these days? You're not alone - age, weight changes, pregnancy, and breastfeeding can all take there toll on your body. Why not perk up with a breast lift?

A breast lift will make you firmer and lift the girls up. It will also enhance your nipples and areolas. Studies have shown that perking up the girls also perks up your brain with a real psychological effect and a significant boost to the self-esteem.

As you know, any time you have surgery, there is the risk of bleeding, reactions to the anesthetic, infection, or other complications; but all of this is very infrequent with a breast lift.

Also, you will be happy to know that your new breast shape will be remain strong, unless you gain or lose a considerable amount of weight, or become pregnant.

Once you have had your lift, you will need to wear a special support bra for about a month or until the discoloration and swelling has just about disappeared. Over time your incisions will heal and fade, but they will remain visible. Not to worry - they are located where they can be concealed with your clothing.

Your breasts may not be entirely symmetrical, and there may be a slightly different height on the nipples. You can always have some minor adjustments made after everything is healed if it really bothers you. Natural breasts have variations, so generally this doesn't pose any problems.

Occasionally, there may be loss of sensation around the nipple area or the breast skin itself, but it really is rare. If you have trouble healing, you may need revision surgery.

Age takes it's toll on our bodies and not just the breasts, thus with age and gravity every woman's breasts will change shape and size. At that time, you may decide to have a second breast lift, and perk the girls back up again. These day's, taking care of your figure and keeping your breasts perky is affordable to everyone.

The Benefits Of Breast Implants

When life gives us lemons we make lemonade, so when life gives you oranges why not make cantaloupes?! Breast implants will not only enhance your look, they can give your self-confidence a real boost too!

There is no question that breast augmentation can do a lot for you, but of course, you need to be realistic too. Your new breasts may not always match your idea of an "ideal" body.

You need to be careful, and you need to be realistic about what differences it will really make to your body. You also need to make sure you are not doing this as an attempt to relieve depression.

In fact, when you meet for your consult with your surgeon he/she is going to ask you several questions to make sure you are a candidate for breast implants. Your surgeon will determine if you are healthy enough for the surgery and that your expectations are realistic.

If your surgeon decides you are a candidate, you will then discuss the breast size you want and also the shape and type. Saline is the most common, but silicone is back on the market. There are benefits and disadvantages to each.

You may be a good candidate for breast implants if any of the following apply to you:

1. You have breasts that are not the same size.

2. You have sagging breasts (you will need a breast lift not a breast enhancement).

3. You feel your breasts are too small.

4. You feel your figure is disproportionate based on the wrong size breasts.

5. You don't like the shape of your breasts after pregnancy and breastfeeding.

6. You don't like the size of your breasts after weight loss.

7. Your breasts have lost their shape with age.

Your plastic surgeon will decide the best surgical approach to get the results that you want. Breast augmentation can give you the body that you want to improve your appearance and make you look and feel younger.

Breast Implant Receives Bee Sting

If you’ve ever wondered what the most embarrassing moment could be if you have breast implants, you are about to find out. A Taiwanese woman reported her breast implant was stung by a bee, which caused the breast implant to rupture.

The 31-year-old woman was riding her motorcycle wearing a low cut dress, when a bee stung her in the right breast. It took only two days – she woke up the second morning to find she had deflated on one side. It gives a new meaning to a small leak.
According to a Southern China Newspaper, the woman’s implants were three years old, and done by a qualified plastic surgeon in China. After hearing about this anomaly, it’s not surprising that you might start to worry about your own breast implants rupturing.

Not to worry – surgeon Zeng Dingchang says the saline implant is designed to resist pressure up to 200 kg so the rupture of this one is very unusual. In fact, I think this young woman should go buy a lottery ticket.

Surgeon Zeng Dingchang said it’s likely that her breast implant ruptured because she was so thin, the implant made her breast skin very thin, and so the bee sting was able to penetrate. The surgeon replaced the ruptured breast implant but did warn her that yoga or acupuncture could result in it bursting again.

Victoria Beckman Admits To Breast Augmentation

Whether you know Victoria Beckham from her days as Posh with the Spice Girls or form her television show "Victoria Beckham: Coming to America," the word is out that Victoria Beckman has had a breast augmentation.

And not only is the word out ... the tongues are a wagging. It seems fans of hers sit on both sides of the coin as to whether she should have had a breast augmentation. Some even go so far as to blame her husband for wanting his wife exceptionally thin leaving not body fat on her even for nice breasts; yet, wanting her to have bigger breasts.

The cat was let out of the bag when at a recent Dodger's baseball game. Victoria said "I really thought that one of my silicones was going to fly out of my armpit then... "Now the world knows she’s had silicone implants.

Why should her fans or anyone else care what she’s doing with her body? Why should it matter to the world that she decided she wanted a nice "pair?" Why, in today’s world do, some still find breast augmentation so provocative?

There seems to still be misunderstandings about the safety of breast implants and why women have breast surgery.

Many still don’t seem to understand that in most cases it has absolutely nothing to do with a man in their life but everything to do with them feeling better about the way their body looks, not only giving them a physical boost but a self esteem boost too.

Free Boob Job Giveaway A Scam

If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. How is it that we know this and yet the wish for something "free" leads us towards a scam? That was just the case with a recent online giveaway for a free boob job. It was thanks to CNN that this scam was recently uncovered.

The site was MyFreeImplants.com and it had been online since 2005. It apparently began after a bachelor party in Vegas and it offers women the ability to work towards free breast implants by chatting with the male customers, sending them photos of themselves, instant messaging, and personal gifts.

Drop by their site and the first thing you’ll see is "have you ever wanted bigger breasts?" Sadly its sites like this that play a role in making breast implants a somewhat shunned because of uncertainty. Thankfully CNN has exposed the site for what it is. The trouble is it probably is not the only such site.

So here are some things to think about if you are considering breast implants. First nothing is for free, and certainly nothing that requires the involvement of a plastic surgeon. Quality costs money and although you certainly don’t have to overpay to do pay for what you get.

You need to research surgeons, and make a short list of those that seem right for you, and then you need to make an appointment for a consult to get all the details.

If you were hoping for a free boob job, think again because you likely have a better chance of winning the lottery.

Future of Silicone gel breast implants

At a recent meeting of The American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS) it was announced by their eminent panel that they would be soon re-launching silicone breast implants. The U.S. FDA has also approved the marketing and use of silicone filled breast implants to be used for Boston breast augmentation purposes by women who are aged 22 or older. This change is recent since for over a decade silicone gel breast implants were strictly restricted to be used for breast reconstruction purposes only. The panel announced that they had carried out research to so show evidence that silicone gel breast implants are no more hazardous to health and can be considered safe and efficacious. This study now brings a glimmer of hope into the lives of so many American women.

American women can now easily make choices and enjoy the same opportunities as their international counterparts to choose over silicone gel breast implants. This boosts the women in the U.S. to know competently make important personal aesthetic and health decisions with regards to their femininity. The now newly available option of silicone gel breast implants is creating new venues for women who are about to have a breast surgery for the first time in their lives. It is also for all those women who have already previously had breast implant surgeries but are looking out for breast implant replacement or revision. Patients who are not considered suitable for saline implants can also undergo silicone breast implant surgery. All those women who are very thin or skinny, or have very little breast muscle or muscle tissue on the chest, silicone gel implants are the best option for them. Because for such women saline implants will not provide a as good result. But then the most important fact is that the type of implants is entirely the patient’ s choice or decision. It is for them to decide which type of breast implant they want and for the doctors to advise exactly which type of implant is more suitable for their body types or health condition. There maybe women for whom both silicone gel and saline implants would produce good results. The panelists discussed further about the advantages, disadvantages about silicone breast implants, their handling, placement, complications and other procedures.

Silicone Breast Implants Add Choices For Women

After more than ten years of controversy and scientific study, the US Food and Drug Administration has approved silicone gel breast implants for general usage. They are now available to all women ages 22 and higher for both reconstructive and cosmetic breast surgery.
The availability of silicone implants will greatly expand the options for women seeking cosmetic breast augmentation. In many situations, they have real advantages over saline breast implants. They tend to look and feel more natural than saline implants. They are less prone to rippling or crinkling which can sometimes be felt and occasionally can become visible under the skin. They are lighter than silicone implants. However, they are thought by some to have a higher rate of capsular contracture, which is scarring around the implant and can make the breasts hard.
In countries where both silicone and saline implants have been available the vast majority of patients and surgeons select silicone implants. This is testimony to their advantages. In the US, we are likely to see a large number of patients select silicone breast implants.
But there will still be a place for saline implants. Some people might simply prefer not to have silicone placed in their body. Silicone implants are more expensive than saline implants. In some cases, the implant is used as a sort of platform to elevate the normal breast tissue rather than to give the breast the entirety of its shape. In this situation, saline implants function just about as effectively as silicone implants.
Silicone implants have not been shown to cause autoimmune diseases such as arthritis and lupus, as had been feared. But patients should realize that any breast augmentation procedure is essentially temporary. Body shape and anatomy can change, there might be problems with healing or the body's reaction to the implant. At some point, it is likely that additional procedures may be necessary. At Rodeo Drive Plastic Surgery, we are already doing quite a few breast augmentations with silicone implants. I expect we will see many more people interested in the procedure in the next few months.

Silicone Breast Enhancement

Many women worldwide go in for a breast enhancement. What drives them to take such a decision? A majority of this women believe in just one thing - You do what you think is the best for you because you are the one who wakes up in your body every morning.

Breast enhancement surgeries have had several success scenarios and many of these women are volunteering to help other women with guidance and information. We came across this testimonial by Rachel, age 37, of Georgia who wrote that, she had breast augmentation surgery at the age of 37 years old. She had been married for 19 years. But had always wanted to have larger breasts. After having 2 children and it became very uncomfortable for her to go shopping for clothes, bathing suits, lingerie, etc. She tried her level best to talk herself out of it for one reason or another but couldn't help feeling depressed. Her husband always assured her that he was happy with her the way she was. It was always a feeling of doing it for herself and not for anybody else. She carried out proper consultation with a plastic surgeon. And one day mustered courage and had the surgery done.

She has been doing great after the surgery. Even though for few days after the operation it was very painful. She had a very long recovery time. The implants did not fall out or leak. She did not have a work-out for days due to the pain. But 4 weeks now, she's feeling amazing and a like a new woman!

Silicone Breast Enhancement

A breast augmentation surgery, or mammaplasty, involves many risks that can be avoided by simply choosing a qualified plastic surgeon, this would be the first measure of precaution. Still there are several other risks and complications that might arise from the surgery, and these will be outlined to you in the consultation, or any of the office visits prior to having the breat implants procedure.

As of May, 2000, saline-filled breast implant devices have been approved by the United States Food and Drug Administration (USFDA) for use in Boston breast augmentation and reconstruction. Breast implants that contain silicone gel are currently restricted to women who meet eligibility criteria to participate in approved study programs.

Patients undergoing augmentation mammaplasty surgery must consider the following:

Breast augmentation or reconstruction with saline-filled implants may not be a one time surgery.
Breast implants of any type are not considered lifetime devices. They cannot be expected to last forever. You will likely require future surgery for implant replacement or removal.
Changes that occur to the breasts following augmentation or reconstruction with implants are not reversible. There may be an unacceptable appearance to the breast if you later choose to have breast implants removed.

Alternative Treatment

Augmentation mammaplasty is an elective surgical operation. Alternative treatment would consist of the use of external breast prostheses or padding, or the transfer of other body tissues to enlarge breast size.

Risks of Augmentation Mammaplasty Surgery

Every surgical procedure involves a certain amount of risk and it is important that you understand the risks involved with augmentation mammaplasty. Additional information concerning breast implants may be obtained from the FDA, package-insert sheets supplied by the implant manufacturer, or other information pamphlets required by individual state laws.

An individual's choice to undergo a surgical procedure is based on the comparison of the risk to potential benefit. Although the majority of women do not experience the following complications, you should discuss each of them with your plastic surgeon to make sure you understand the risks, potential complications, and consequences of breast augmentation. Problems associated with breast implants can be inherent to this type of implanted medical device or relate to complications of a surgical procedure. Additional advisory information regarding this subject should be reviewed by patients considering surgery that involves breast implants.

While every patient experiences her own individual risks and benefits following breast implant surgery, clinical data suggests that most women will be satisfied with the outcome of breast implant surgery despite the occurrence of problems inherent with breast implant surgery.

Silicone Breast Enhancement

Well, it's official. The FDA has finally lifted their almost 14 year ban on silicone breast Enhancement which had resulted after overwhelming health complaints from women who had this implant device.

Now, the FDA is backing the return of the infamously more natural feeling and looking breast Enhancement, and two lucky manufacturers seem to have the corner on the market right now.

A company called Inamed is currently one the sole producers of this supposedly newer and safer implant device for women who get breast Enhancement, with the original manufacturer, Dow Corning, now a defunct company after being inundated with litigation over the silicone Enhancement, having to file bankruptcy. The other manufacturer to gain FDA approval to start almost immediately marketing their implant was Mentor Corp.

So why now has the FDA decided to lift this ban with only a few restrictions on the silicone Enhancement? Well, although they have met with a lot of resistance from consumer advocacy groups who say the device is nowhere near proven to again be safe, the FDA has agreed to pretty much widely offer the silicone option again.

The only restrictions will be that the person opting for silicone over saline must be at least 22 years of age, which is when experts agree the breast has fully matured on a woman, and there are no restrictions at all if the surgery in reconstructive in nature.

Reconstructive breast implant surgery may be due to a cancer that resulted in removal or partial removal of a breast, or other circumstances where the breasts are seriously deformed or maimed.

Many analysts believe that this new, almost carte blanche approval of the silicone breast Enhancement will lead to the eventual takeover of saline Enhancement, the only currently approved breast Enhancement on the market.

They believe this to be true because many women have actually requested to have the silicone Enhancement, and most women want a more natural feel to their breast Enhancement and look than the saline breast implant can currently offer in their eyes.

The silicone offers a more natural look because it is a gel-like substance which actually mimics the look of real breast tissue fairly well, and "moves" more like a real breast than saline does.
They also are reported to drop more naturally and lay more naturally than a saline implant does. Not only that, but women with silicone breast Enhancement report that both they and their partners think the silicone implant feels natural.

But at what cost? Many silicone-implanted women complained of health issues and complications, and there was an alarmingly high rupture rate on these implants, which led to lawsuits and FDA complaints, and ultimately led to the 14 year ban.

The interesting part here though is that years of research were conducted to see if silicone breast implants had any medical correlation to the reported health issues, which ranged from lupus and cancer, to autoimmune diseases and other complications that could not even be pinpointed.

The benefit that silicone has over saline is only cosmetic in nature. Saline is a completely inert substance which does no harm if the implant ruptures, and this is why it has been the only implant used, while silicone itself has never been proven to be 100% safe when introduced into the blood stream.

The FDA has made statements saying the research studies and tests show that the two new implants approved for sale have been shown to be reasonably safe, at least enough for approval, and that there have been no alarming findings that the implant is prone to rupture the silicone fluid into the blood stream.

Although they have been reintroduced for sale, the FDA does tag a warning on them reminding women that they are not lifetime devices, and will need to be removed and replaced, requiring another surgery about once every ten years.

This is actually true for any type of implant though. They also have required manufacturers to sponsor ongoing studies of women with the implants, to further cement the fact that they are safe, over the long haul.
